Year 10 & Year 12 Work Experience | We would like to remind parents and carers of our Year 10 and Year 12 students about the 2026 Work Experience programme, an important opportunity that supports students’ personal development, confidence and future career aspirations. Work experience enables students to gain first-hand insight into the world of work, develop key employability skills and make informed decisions about their next steps. To ensure students are able to take part, it is essential that all key deadlines are met. Please note that without completed consent forms and confirmed placement details, students will not be able to participate.
Key Dates
Students who have already completed work experience have spoken very positively about the impact it had on them. See some of the comments shared:
We strongly encourage families to support students in securing a suitable placement early and in meeting the deadlines above so they can make the most of this valuable opportunity. If you have any questions about Work Experience, please contact Dr Lucas, Assistant Principal (flucas@liftbexleyheath.org).
Inclusion | Healthy Holiday Habits | It’s important for students to relax over the break, but keeping good habits and routines helps them return ready to learn. Even a short 15 minute study session or some reading each day can make a difference. This could be either reading or by completing homework.
Students should stick to regular bedtimes to get enough rest, and parents are encouraged to monitor screen time to prevent excessive phone or device use. Physical activity and fresh air are also essential, try a new sport, a walk, or a visit to a local park, even if the weather is gloomy.
Apprenticeship Week 2026 | During this Apprenticeship Week, students were introduced to the wide range of apprenticeship schemes available and the different levels they can progress through, from intermediate to higher and degree apprenticeships. The sessions were designed to help students understand that apprenticeships are a valuable pathway, combining practical work experience with recognised qualifications.
Students had the opportunity to explore the variety of industries that offer apprenticeship opportunities, including business, engineering, health, construction, digital technology and many more. They also learned about the key skills and qualities employers look for, such as teamwork, communication, reliability and a positive attitude towards learning.
Throughout the week, students were encouraged to ask questions, reflect on their interests and consider how apprenticeships could support their future career goals. Many students expressed an interest in exploring apprenticeship routes further and recognised the benefits of earning while learning, gaining hands-on experience and developing essential professional skills.
We hope this week has increased students’ awareness and confidence in considering apprenticeships as a strong and rewarding option after completing their studies. We will continue to support students by providing information, guidance and access to opportunities that will help them make informed decisions about their next steps.
We would encourage parents and carers to continue these conversations at home by exploring https://www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/ together and researching apprenticeship opportunities across a range of sectors.
If you would like to share your career journey with our wonderful students, please contact Dr Lucas, Assistant Principal (flucas@liftbexleyheath.org).

What's been happening in Mathematics this week? | A huge well done to our Year 11 and Year 13 students for the outstanding effort and resilience shown during the recent mock examinations. We are particularly proud of those making significant progress in Mathematics, demonstrating clear improvement since the autumn mocks. Your dedication and hard work are inspiring, and we look forward to seeing this progress continue. We have been furiously marking the mock papers in the department to ensure your feedback is ready after half-term.
Our Maths Department is committed to fostering a love of mathematics beyond lessons. Through clubs like Axiom Maths, Chess, and Homework Support, students develop problem-solving, strategic thinking, and confidence. Congratulations to our UKMT entrants, including Year 09 Gold medalists Yuze and Freddie, as well as students earning 06 Silver and 17 Bronze awards. Year 10 students achieved 05 Silver and 11 Bronze awards. Gold medalists will now proceed to the Kangaroo Challenge, with the Jack Petchey Challenge also on the horizon.
Inside classrooms, students from Year 07 to Year 12 are building essential skills, from foundational algebra and geometry to advanced mechanics, statistics, and trigonometry, ensuring a rich and challenging learning experience for all.
Safeguarding | Fake News and Rumour Spreading | School holidays offer teenagers a valuable break from academic pressures, but the loss of daily structure can often lead to increased screen time. With more unstructured hours, many young people turn to social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat for entertainment and connection. While these platforms can support friendships, excessive use, particularly “doomscrolling,” or continuously consuming negative or emotionally charged content may affect teenagers’ mood, sleep, and overall well-being. Without the routine of the school day, boredom and later bed times can make it harder for teenagers to disengage from their devices. Spending long periods online may also increase the likelihood of impulsive behaviour, including posting unkind comments, sharing embarrassing or inappropriate content, or reacting quickly during disagreements. Often, this behaviour is not intended to cause harm, but it can damage relationships and create a digital footprint with lasting consequences.
Parents can play an important role by maintaining open, non-judgemental communication about online experiences. Encouraging teenagers to pause before posting and consider how their words might affect others helps build empathy and responsible decision-making. Setting clear but collaborative boundaries such as device free times or balancing online activity with offline hobbies can further support healthier habits. It is also helpful for parents to watch for signs that online activity may be having a negative impact, such as mood changes, irritability, sleep disruption, or withdrawal from family life. Where concerns arise, calm guidance is often more effective than punishment, focusing on helping teenagers understand the impact of their actions. Technology is a central part of modern adolescence, and the goal is not to remove it but to guide young people towards safe and respectful use. By promoting balance, modelling positive habits, and encouraging offline activities, parents can help teenagers enjoy the benefits of digital connection while protecting their well-being during the holiday period and beyond.
Year 09 Options Update | Last week, our Year 09 students took a major step toward their future during our KS4 Options Bazaar. The energy in the hall was fantastic as students moved between departments, asked teachers about course content and got a real feel for what their next two years of study could look like. It was wonderful to see so many students asking insightful questions!
The time for browsing is over, and the time for deciding has arrived. To make their selections official, students must follow these steps:
Aspens Canteen Menu | Families have requested to see the menu for the food available in the canteen which can be found below. This does not include breakfast items. For the first back after half-term, we will have the Week 01 menu:
British Heart Foundation Support | On Friday 13 February, students were invited to add a splash of red to their normal school uniform to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The British Heart Foundation is a leading UK charity that funds vital research into heart and circulatory diseases, including heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia. The money raised helps scientists develop new treatments, improve early diagnosis and support people living with heart conditions, helping more families across the country to live longer, healthier lives.
Our student leaders raised over £100 for the charity.
Safeguarding | Support During Half-Term | Supporting teenage well-being is a shared priority for families, schools, and communities. Adolescence can bring emotional challenges, social pressures, and increased independence, making it important for parents to know where to turn if their child needs extra support. For families living in London Borough of Bexley and across North Kent, a range of trusted services are available to help young people navigate difficulties and maintain positive mental health.
Local early-help services can often provide the most immediate support. The Bexley Early Help team works with families to address concerns before they escalate, offering practical advice on topics such as emotional wellbeing, behaviour, school attendance, and family relationships. Similarly, Kent Family Hub centres provide welcoming spaces where parents and teenagers can access guidance, workshops, and signposting to specialist services.
Health services also play an important role. The National Health Service offers support through GPs, who can discuss emotional or behavioural concerns and help families explore appropriate next steps. If a young person is already receiving additional support in school, we can support with coordinating care and ensuring consistent support through the holiday period.
Alongside local provision, several national platforms are designed specifically for young people. Kooth provides free, confidential online well-being support, including moderated forums and access to trained professionals. YoungMinds offers extensive resources for both teenagers and parents, helping families better understand the challenges young people may face. For children who may prefer to seek advice independently, Childline provides private support via phone and online chat.

What's been happening in Science this week? | Our students have been getting fully hands-on in science this term. Members of the Dissection Club explored the intricate structures of flowers, carefully dissecting them to learn about reproductive organs, pollination, and plant anatomy. This hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of how plants function and reinforced key concepts from their lessons.
Meanwhile, Year 09 scientists tackled a required practical investigating the relationship between acceleration, mass, and force. Students designed experiments, collected data, and analysed their results to see how these factors interact in real-world physics. This practical work not only strengthened their understanding of Newton’s laws but also developed their experimental and analytical skills.
Through these activities, students have been combining curiosity with practical skills, bringing science to life in the lab!
