Let's Read at Home over Summer | We know that reading can open doors to imagination, confidence, and lifelong learning, and the summer holidays provide a wonderful opportunity to nurture this habit at home.

As the writer George R.R. Martin reminds us, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.” With this in mind, we are encouraging all students to spend time reading over the summer and, where possible, to enjoy this together with you.

To support this, we are delighted to offer each student the opportunity to choose one free book for you to enjoy at home as a family. There is no cost to you, simply select a book that you and your child would like to read together.

While students continue to have access to digital platforms such as Sparx Reader and Bedrock, we recognise the unique value of a physical book, the feel of turning pages, the chance to share a story side by side, and the opportunity to pause, discuss, and reflect together. As Dr. Seuss famously said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Key information:

  • Each student may request one book
  • Books are completely free of charge
  • Orders must be placed by Sunday, 14 June 2026

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and make reading a shared and enjoyable part of your summer. If you would like to select a book, please use this form here.

Year 10 and Year 12 Mock Examinations | We will be holding a virtual information evening on Tuesday, 02 June from 17:00–18:00 to support families in understanding and preparing for the upcoming mock examination period.

During this session, we will:

  • Provide an overview of the mock examination schedule and expectations
  • Explain the purpose of mocks and how they support students’ progress and readiness for final exams
  • Share detailed information about access arrangements, including how these are implemented for students who require additional support
  • Outline the support available for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • Offer practical guidance and strategies to help students revise effectively and manage their preparation at home

This session is an important opportunity to ensure families feel informed and confident in supporting their child through this key stage of the academic year.

A link to join the virtual meeting will be shared with families via email closer to the event.

End of term Celebrations | As we reached the end of term, we were delighted to come together for our celebration assemblies, recognising not only achievement but the significant progress so many of our students have made. These assemblies provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the determination, resilience and commitment shown throughout the term.

Students were celebrated across a wide range of areas, with a particular emphasis on improvement. We recognised those who have made notable academic progress, demonstrated improved and excellent attendance, and shown increased engagement and commitment to their learning. It was especially encouraging to see so many students being acknowledged for the positive strides they have made, highlighting the impact of their hard work and perseverance. Alongside this, we also celebrated achievements in extra-curricular activities and successes beyond the classroom, including sporting and musical accomplishments.

In addition, more than 60 students were invited to a special pizza celebration on Friday in recognition of their outstanding or improved attendance, behaviour and engagement. A further 45 students received ‘In It To Win It’ prizes, celebrating their commitment to their education right through to the final day of term.

We are incredibly proud of all our students, particularly those who have made meaningful improvements this term. Congratulations to everyone who was recognised, and thank you to all students for contributing to such a positive and successful term. We look forward to building on this progress and celebrating even more successes next term.

Homework Over Half Term | We are pleased to report that our whole-school Homework engagement rate is increasing. The most significant progress was made in Years 7 and 8, where completion rates have topped 93% and 87%, respectively and are climbing. This is due in large part to the support families continue to give their children, and, by extension, our school. Thank you for being part of this amazing learning community.

At Bexleyheath, we pride ourselves on providing an excellent education for every child, every day. For us, high homework engagement is one avenue of achieving this. It is a tool that can have a powerful impact on student growth and academic success. When students consistently complete and participate in homework activities, they strengthen their understanding of new knowledge and develop valuable independent thinking skills. Homework also encourages responsibility, time management, and self-discipline, all of which are essential for long-term achievement both inside and outside the classroom.

There is evidence that learners often gain greater confidence because regular practice helps to reinforce understanding and reduce anxiety associated with challenging concepts. In addition, strong participation can improve communication between teachers, students, and parents, creating a more supportive learning environment.

Over the holidays, we therefore expect students to continue to engage with their homework. The current tasks, however, will have an extended due date of Thursday, 04 June 2026. This is the first week back.  So there is plenty of time to complete the work. Please do not leave it till late.

Safeguarding | How has AI impacted bullying? | Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly common part of young people’s everyday lives through social media, messaging apps, image-editing tools, gaming platforms and chatbots. While AI can be used positively to support creativity, revision and communication, it has also created new opportunities for bullying and harmful online behaviour, which can have a significant impact on both individuals and the wider school community. The concerns further increase as students enter holidays and have access to their phones for a longer period of time and students are idle.

Schools nationally are seeing a rise in concerns linked to AI-generated content, including fake or manipulated images, impersonation accounts, edited videos, and messages created to embarrass, intimidate or target others. In some cases, harmful rumours or inappropriate content can be shared quickly online, often outside school hours, but the impact is then felt within school the following day through friendship breakdowns, anxiety, conflict and disruption to learning.

It is important to recognise that online behaviour does not stay online. When bullying or harmful content is shared digitally, it can affect students’ emotional wellbeing, confidence, attendance and sense of safety in school. It can also have a wider impact on the school community by damaging relationships between peers, increasing tensions within friendship groups and creating additional pressures for families and staff supporting young people.

We encourage parents and carers to continue having open, calm and supportive conversations with their children about how they use technology and interact with others online. Regular discussions around respectful communication, digital responsibility, privacy settings and the risks of sharing images or personal information can make a significant difference. Young people should also be reminded that creating, sharing or forwarding harmful AI-generated content can have serious safeguarding and disciplinary consequences.

As a school, we remain committed to educating students about safe and responsible online behaviour and to responding robustly to any concerns involving bullying, harassment or inappropriate use of technology. We ask all members of our community to work together to promote kindness, empathy and respect both online and offline. We encourage you as families to:

  • Speak with your child about their online engagement
  • Limit screen time
  • Check their online activity

If you have any concerns regarding online bullying or AI-related content involving your child, please contact the school safeguarding team for support and guidance.

If you have any concerns about your child’s safety or wellbeing, please contact the school’s safeguarding team without delay: safeguarding@liftbexleyheath.org. In an emergency, or if you believe a child may be at immediate risk, please contact the police directly.  Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep our community safe.

Year 06 Transitions | Dramatic Drama Workshop | The Performing Arts Faculty would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the Year 6 students who took part in our Dramatic Drama Workshop on Wednesday, 20 May.

The workshop was designed to give students a broader experience of the performing arts, moving beyond traditional stage performance and introducing them to the creative world of puppetry and physical theatre. During the session, students created their own “Gyre & Gimble” paper puppets, inspired by imaginative storytelling and character design.

Students were guided through the full creative process, including:

  • Designing and constructing their own unique puppets
  • Exploring how to use movement and physical expression to bring characters to life
  • Working collaboratively in groups to develop short performances
  • Experimenting with both realistic actions and imaginative storytelling

It was fantastic to see students fully engage with the challenge, demonstrating creativity, resilience, and teamwork throughout. The level of enthusiasm was evident, with groups confidently performing and even incorporating inventive elements—such as an impressive attempt at moonwalking—into their final pieces.

We were particularly proud of how students supported one another, shared ideas, and embraced a new and exciting form of performance. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zones and try something different was a real highlight of the day.

It was a pleasure to work with such talented and enthusiastic students, and we very much look forward to welcoming them into our school community in September.

Extra-Curricular Clubs | The Bexley Schools Athletics Championships | Our Year 9 and Year 10 students proudly represented the school at the Bexley Schools Athletics Championships, competing against more than 15 local schools across a wide range of track and field events.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated outstanding effort, determination, and teamwork, representing the school with pride both in their performances and through their exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship. The event provided a valuable opportunity for students to challenge themselves, compete at a high level, and showcase the skills they have been developing through training and participation in school sports.

There were several notable individual achievements:

  • Amy (Year 10) secured an excellent 1st place in High Jump
  • Jessica (Year 10) delivered a fantastic performance to take 1st place in the 1500m
  • Lucy (Year 9) achieved a strong 2nd place in Shot Putt
  • Reuben (Year 9) earned 2nd place in High Jump
  • Chloe (Year 10) finished an impressive 3rd place in the 300m

These results reflect not only individual talent, but also the commitment and resilience shown by all students throughout the competition.

We are incredibly proud of every student who took part. Their positive attitude, willingness to support one another, and determination to perform at their best contributed to a highly successful and enjoyable event. It was also encouraging to see how participation in our wide range of extracurricular sports clubs continues to build students’ confidence, skill, and passion for athletics.

We look forward to seeing our students continue to develop and achieve in future sporting events.

What's been happening in Business/IT/Media this week? | This term, Year 07 students have been developing their digital skills through an exciting introduction to web development and basic HTML coding. Working within a real programming environment using the Raspberry Pi platform, students were able to see their code come to life and gain hands-on experience of how websites are built.

As part of the project, students designed and created their own tourism websites based on a country of their choice. Their websites showcased a range of features, including information about famous landmarks, local culture, traditional foods, and popular tourist attractions. This allowed students to combine their creativity with research skills, producing engaging and informative content.

Throughout the unit, students learned how to use key HTML elements such as headings, paragraphs, images, and hyperlinks to structure their web pages effectively. They also explored how to enhance user experience by experimenting with colour schemes, page layouts, and navigation menus, making their websites both interactive and visually appealing.

This project has supported students in developing important skills including problem-solving, logical thinking, creativity, and resilience. It has also helped to build their confidence in coding and deepen their understanding of how technology is used in the real world.

We are incredibly proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by all students, and the high-quality websites they have produced reflect their growing skills and creativity.

For our KS4 and KS5 cohorts, it’s been a whirlwind term for our department, with students completing examinations across Business, Economics, Media, Digital Media, Enterprise, and DIT. To prepare, students balanced rigorous coursework submissions with targeted revision sessions, interventions, and exam warm-ups.

Throughout this demanding period, students have leveled up their independent research, problem-solving, time management, and extended writing. They’ve also masterfully applied real-world business and media case studies to their exam answers.

We are immensely proud of the hard work and stellar attitude shown by all students. As Years 11 and 13 finish their final exams on a high note, we are shifting this positive momentum to Years 10 and 12 as they begin their new coursework units and look toward the future.

Change to the School Day | To ensure a smooth transition to our new school day structure, we are launching a weekly informational spotlight to break down each aspect of the upcoming changes and answer your questions directly. In addition to these weekly updates, you will receive a comprehensive letter at the start of the new term to provide complete clarity and prevent any misinformation.

This week, we are focusing on the visual breakdown of the new daily schedule and specific lesson timings. These adjustments have been thoughtfully designed in direct response to valuable feedback from our school community. Specifically, we have focused on two key improvements:

  • Optimised Lesson Lengths: Shortening instructional periods to maximise student focus, sustain high engagement, and reduce cognitive fatigue. Lessons will change from 75 mins without transitions built into 55 mins with specific transitions built in.
  • Increased Movement Breaks: Incorporating more frequent transitions throughout the day to support student well-being, improve concentration, and allow everyone to refresh between subjects as well as being able to go to the toilet.

Please review the timetable graphics below to familiarise yourself with the new daily routine.

What's been happening in Mathematics this week? | This week, our Year 07 students continued to advance their core numerical proficiency by tackling the key mathematical concepts of estimation and calculating percentages of amounts. In a featured lesson expertly delivered by two of our aspiring trainee teachers, the students moved beyond simple memorisation to build a deep, conceptual understanding of how these values work in practice. The session was structured to transition from guided instruction into focused independent practice, allowing students to confidently master the step-by-step methods and apply their skills to real-world mathematical problems.

Year 8 focused heavily on spatial reasoning and geometry, building the foundational skills required to accurately calculate both the surface area and volume of prisms and various three-dimensional solids. Meanwhile, Year 9 delved into data representation and probability by learning how to construct and interpret tree diagrams to map out multiple outcomes. To stretch and challenge our higher-attaining Year 9 students, the lesson also featured advanced, higher-order GCSE problem-solving questions, encouraging them to apply their multi-step reasoning and analytical skills to complex, exam-style scenarios.

Half-term is a great time to have a break and prepare for the next half-term, especially with the mocks ahead for Year 10 and Year 12. To support independent study and GCSE preparation, students are encouraged to regularly make use of the following revision platforms:
