The course uses a historicist approach to the study of literature, resting upon reading texts within a shared context. It encourages students to explore relationships between texts and the contexts in which they are written, received, and understood. The study involves investigating and connecting texts, drawing out patterns of similarity and difference. It privileges the process of making autonomous meaning, encouraging students to debate and challenge interpretations as they develop informed personal responses.
